Le groupe franco-russe RUBICON vient de sortir son nouvel album, Demonstar (chronique ici). Son chanteur et leader, Ivan "Ian" Boulankov, a accepté de répondre à nos questions dans cette nouvelle interview.
Rock Meeting - Metalden : Salut Ian, merci d'avoir pris le temps pour cette interview avec RockMeeting. Vous êtes le chanteur de RUBICON , vous venez de sortir le nouvel album, Demonstar, le deuxième. Le groupe existant depuis 2000, cela fait peu de sorties, pouvez-vous nous dire pourquoi, et l'histoire du groupe ? De quelle partie de la Russie êtes-vous ?

Ian Boulankov : Salut! Heureux d’avoir l'opportunité de donner cette interview ! Donc, je viens de Krasnoïarsk, une ville pas si grande que ça, perdue quelque part dans la nature sauvage de Sibérie... Et c'est la raison pour laquelle il a fallu si longtemps pour sortir le premier album : comme cela arrive souvent avec les groupes locaux, ils commencent leurs activités dans des endroits où il n'y a absolument aucune industrie de la musique. Depuis la fondation, nous avons traversé de nombreux changements de line-up, expérimenté le style et le son : par exemple, en 2010, l'EP Internet "T-800" est sorti, dans la tonalité du Metal industriel. En conséquence, le travail sur le premier "Welcome To Wasteland" a commencé vers 2015 et le chemin jusqu'à la sortie a été long et difficile, cependant, j'aime toujours le résultat : malgré le manque de conditions, nous avons réussi à faire une assez haute qualité et premier album original, à mon avis.
RM : Quelle est la situation avec le covid en Russie, est-ce difficile pour vous, et pour les artistes ?
IB : Cela peut paraître étrange, mais le Covid n'a quasiment pas affecté le travail sur le nouvel album : nous vivons dans des régions différentes et tout le processus de création est organisé via Internet, donc il n'y a eu aucune difficulté...
RM : Dans votre groupe russe, il y a un guitariste français qui fait du bon boulot sur l'album, Bob Saliba, depuis quelle date ? Et comment c'est arrivé ?
IB : Donc, tout a commencé après que nous ayons commencé à travailler avec un merveilleux bassiste et producteur moscovite Dmitry Belf en 2018. C'est avec son aide que s'est formé le line-up actuel de musiciens de très haut niveau. C'est aussi grâce à Belf que nous avons embauché le guitariste français Bob Saliba, dont les solos mélodiques sont devenus une "fonctionnalité" incontestable sur le nouvel album ! Ils se sont rencontrés lors d'une tournée européenne avec le groupe légendaire Therion, Bob a aimé notre nouveau matériel et il était heureux de rejoindre le groupe !.
RM : Le line-up officiel ne mentionne pas de batteur, est-ce une situation permanente, n'y a-t-il qu'un batteur live dans le groupe ? Le bassiste Dmitry "Belf" Safronov est également un producteur établi, je suppose qu'il a contribué à la progression du groupe, que pouvez-vous dire de lui ?
IB : C'est le musicien et producteur le plus professionnel avec qui j'ai travaillé ! Et, bien sûr, la progression du groupe est en grande partie grâce à lui. Il a également capté un grand batteur, qui a préféré rester en statut de session.
RM : Concernant la direction musicale, la présentation officielle indique que votre musique est du Dark Heavy Metal, peut-on ajouter qu'il y a des éléments Power, et Industriel ?
IB : Oui bien sûr. Et aussi - le fait que notre musique a tendance à avoir un son plus sombre que le Heavy Metal traditionnel, nous préférons un thème plus sombre pour les paroles, ainsi que des éléments de styles tels que le Doom metal et le Black metal, qui se mélangent organiquement à notre musique.
RM : Katerina Pobedinskaya a une grande contribution sur les claviers, le morceau « Line Of Dreams » est l'un de mes préférés, à cause de ses instrumentations, mais pas seulement, je peux aussi citer « If It Bleeds », peut-on dire qu'elle apporte le éléments industriels qui contribuent à éviter la linéarité dans l'album ?
IB : Absolument. Cependant, le principal mérite de Katerina sur cet album sont les titres Speed Of Night et Robot God. Belf et moi avons fait le reste, y compris ceux que vous avez mentionnés.
RM : Le processus de composition musicale est-il collectif, ou seuls certains musiciens écrivent-ils ?
IB : Le processus s'organise comme suit : d'abord, je propose une ligne vocale pour un texte pré-écrit (le mien ou un co-auteur), l'enregistre dans un home studio avec des claviers et une batterie approximative. Ainsi, nous obtenons la première démo. Ensuite, je l'envoie à Belf, il fait un arrangement professionnel et tout est envoyé à Bob, qui travaille sur les parties de guitare. Ensuite, tout cela est complètement réécrit, le mixage et le mastering sont effectués - et c'est tout !)
RM : Même question sur les paroles, et quels sont les sujets abordés, je suppose des éléments de science-fiction, mais peut-être d'autres ?
IB : Donc, en parlant de nos paroles, nous devrions d'abord mentionner la science-fiction classique et l'horreur-fantasy comme source d'inspiration : des livres d'auteurs puissants comme Robert Howard, Stephen King, Clive Barker, Sergey Lukjanenko et ainsi de suite... Mais nous avons notre propre concept de science-fiction, qui sera certainement mis en œuvre sur le prochain album, sur lequel nous travaillons actuellement.
RM : Vous avez choisi un nouveau label français, est-ce dû à Bob Saliba, êtes-vous satisfait pour l'instant ?
IB : Bien sûr, nous devons notre collaboration avec le label Rock City à notre ami et guitariste Bob ! Et c'est juste une expérience incroyablement inspirante ! C'est un grand plaisir pour nous de travailler avec un vrai label professionnel qui met tout en œuvre pour promouvoir notre musique !
RM : Tu as une grande prestation vocale dans cet album, quels sont les chanteurs qui t'ont influencé au début ?
IB : Tout d'abord, merci beaucoup pour cette critique si flatteuse ! Mes sources d'inspiration, comme il n'est pas difficile de le deviner, sont Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford et bien d'autres artistes du Heavy Metal classique ! Parmi mes chanteurs préférés dans ce genre, je voudrais aussi citer Jon Oliva, King Diamond, Dio, Paul Di'anno, Blaze Bayley... et je suis aussi un grand fan de Tiamat, bien qu'ils soient d'un autre genre la musique.
RM : Nous connaissons très peu de groupes de heavy metal russes en dehors de la Russie, pensez-vous que cela est dû au choix général de chanter en russe, et votre choix de l'anglais est-il dû à cette raison, dans le but d'avoir une carrière internationale ?
IB : Je suis juste absolument sûr que la musique comme celle que nous jouons doitsonner en anglais ! Elle a été créée dans un environnement anglophone! L'anglais est la langue la plus harmonieuse pour ce type de musique ! C'est mon opinion)
Mais je ne refuserais pas non plus une carrière internationale. De plus, je m'efforce de toutes mes forces pour que Rubicon prenne sa place parmi les groupes de metal européens !
RM : Que pensez-vous du commentaire de Gene Simmons selon lequel "le rock est mort", lié au problème de partage de fichiers, de streaming ?
IB : Eh bien, tout d'abord, je suis un fan de KISS et j'ai beaucoup de respect pour Gene Simmons ! C'est une légende et il a droit à son opinion ! Il a de quoi comparer la situation actuelle, cela ne fait aucun doute ! Le rock est mort dans les aspects dont il se souvient, des millions de royalties, des limousines, des hôtels, tous ces attributs de la vie stéréotypée de la rock star... Cette époque est définitivement révolue, oui. Mais la musique elle-même continue de vivre et de se développer ! Un exemple de cela peut être le fait que nous et des centaines d'autres jeunes groupes qui continuent à travailler simplement parce que nous aimons cette musique et que nous ne pensons pas à nous-mêmes en dehors d'elle !
RM : Et plus généralement quelle est la situation spécifique en Russie.
Est-ce que le côté rebelle d'un groupe de métal en Russie est facile, y a-t-il des restrictions ou vous sentez-vous libre en tant qu'artiste ? De quoi êtes-vous le plus fier professionnellement ?
IB : Dans notre travail, nous n'abordons absolument pas les questions politiques et religieuses, car je crois que la musique métal est quelque chose comme un portail vers d'autres mondes et que les choses momentanées n'y ont pas leur place. En conséquence, nous n'avons aucun problème avec cela.
Professionnellement ? Je suis fier du niveau que j'ai réussi à atteindre sur le nouvel album.
RM : De quoi êtes-vous le plus fier personnellement ?
IB : Personnellement ? Vous voulez dire mes réalisations personnelles ? ...Eh bien, eh bien... Je ne peux pas me vanter d'avoir une famille prospère, des enfants, et ainsi de suite... Mais j'ai une bonne bibliothèque de littérature fantastique, une bonne bibliothèque musicale... J'ai le meilleur line-up de groupe que je ne pouvais que souhaiter !)
RM : Quel est le plus difficile pour vous à l'avenir ?
IB : La tâche la plus difficile, mais en même temps intéressante pour moi, est d'amener RUBICON au niveau d'un groupe européen de tournée.
RM : Quelque chose que vous aimeriez ajouter aux lecteurs de Rockmeeting et aux fans français ?
IB : Merci pour cet accueil si chaleureux de ce nouvel album ! C'est incroyable ! J'espère vous voir à des concerts à l’avenir ! Restez métal !

RM : Hi Ian, thanks for taking the time for this interview with RockMeeting. You are the singer of RUBICON , you have just released the new album, Demonstar, the second one. As the band exists since 2000, it seems a few, can you tell as why, and the history of the band? From what part of Russia are you?
Ian Boulankov : Hi there! Glad to have the opportunity to give this interview! So, I'm from Krasnoyarsk, not so big city, lost somewhere in Siberian wilderness... And that's the answer why it took so long time to release the first album: As it often happens with local bands, started their activities in the places where there is absolutely no music industry, since the foundation we have gone through many line-up changes, experimented with the style and sound: for example, in 2010 the Internet EP "T-800" was released, sustained in the key of Industrial Metal. As a result, the work on debut "Welcome To Wasteland" began around 2015 and the path to release was long and difficult, however, I still like the result: despite the lack of conditions, we managed to make a fairly high-quality and original debut album, in my opinion.
RM : What’s the situation with covid in Russia, is it difficult for you, and for artists?
IB : This may sound strange, but Covid almost did not affect the work on the new album in any way: we live in different regions and the entire creative process is organized using the Internet, so there were no difficulties...
RM : In your Russian band, there is a French guitarist who does a great job on the album, Bob Saliba, since what date? And how it has happened?
IB : So, everything's started after we started working with a wonderful Moscow bass guitarist and producer Dmitry Belf in 2018. It was with his help that the current line-up of very high-class musicians was formed. It is also thanks to Belf that the French guitarist Bob Saliba joined us, whose melodic solos have become an undoubted "feature" on the new album! They met during a European tour with the legendary band Therion, Bob liked our new material and he was happy to join the band!)
RM : The official line-up does not mention a drummer, is it a permanent situation, is there only a live drummer in the band? The bassist Dmitry "Belf" Safronov is also an established producer, I guess he contributed to the band's progress, what can you say about him?
IB : He's the most professional musician and producer I have worked with! And, of course, the progress of the band is largely due to him. He also attracted a great drummer, who preferred to remain in session status.
RM : About the musical direc1on, the official presenta1on tells that your music is Dark Heavy Metal, can we add that there are Power, and Industrial elements?
IB : Yes, of course. And also - the fact that our music tends to have a darker sound than traditional Heavy Metal, we prefer a darker theme of lyrics, as well as elements of styles such as Doom metal and Black metal, which organically blend with our music.
RM : Katerina Pobedinskaya has a great contribu1on on the keys, the track « Line Of Dreams » is one of my favorite ones, due to her keys, but not only, I can also quote “If It Bleeds”, can we say she is bringing the industrial elements that contribute to avoid linearity in the album ?
IB : Definitely. However, the main merit of Katerina on this album are tracks Speed Of Night and Robot God. Belf and I did the rest, including the ones you mentioned.
RM : Is the process of composing music a collective one, or only some musicians are writing?
IB : The process is organized as follows: first, I come up with a vocal line for a pre-written text (mine or a joint one with co-authors), record it in a home studio together with keyboards and approximate drums. Thus, we get the first demo. Then I send it to Belf, he makes a professional arrangement and it's all sent to Bob, who is working on the guitar parts. Then all this is rewritten completely, mixing and mastering is performed - and that's it!)
RM : Same question about the lyrics, and what are the subjects covered, I guess some elements of science fiction, but may be other ones?
IB : So, talkin' about our lyrics, first we should mention the classic Sci-Fi and horror-fantasy as the source of inspiration: books by the mighty authors as Robert Howard, Stephen King, Clive Barker, Sergey Lukjanenko and so on... But we have our own sci-fi concept, which will certainly be implemented on the next album, which we are currently working on.
RM : You have chosen a French new label, is it due to Bob Saliva, are you satisfied for now?
IB : Of course, we owe our collaboration with the Rock City label to our friend and guitarist Bob! And it's just an incredibly inspiring experience! It is a great pleasure for us to work with a real professional label that does everything possible to promote our music!
RM : You have a great singing in this album, what are the singers who influenced you at the beginning?
IB : First of all, thank you so much for such a flattering review! My sources of inspiration, as it is not difficult to guess, are Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, and many other artists of classic Heavy Metal! Among my favorite singers in this genre, I would also like to mention Jon Oliva, King Diamond, Dio, Paul Di'anno, Blaze Bayley... and I am also a huge fan of Tiamat, although they are from a different kind of music.
RM : We know a very few Russian heavy metal bands outside of Russia, do you think it is due of the general choice of singing in Russian, and your choice of English is it due to this reason, trying to have an international career?
IB : I'm just absolutely sure that music like the one we perform should sound in English! It was created in an English-speaking environment! English is the most harmonious language for this type of music! This is my opinion)
But I would not refuse an international career either. Moreover, I am striving with all my might to ensure that Rubicon takes its place among European metal bands!
RM : What do you think about Gene Simmons’ comment that "rock is dead”, linked to problem of file sharing, streaming?
IB : Well, first of all, I'm a KISS fan and I have a lot of respect for Gene Simmons! He is a legend and he has the right to his opinion! He has something to compare the current situation with, there is no doubt about it! Rock is dead in the quality that he remembers, millions of royalties, limousines, hotels, all these attributes of the stereotypical rock-star life... That era is definitely gone, yes. But the music itself continues to live and develop! An example of this can be us and hundreds of other young bands who continue to work simply because we love this music and do not think of ourselves outside of it!
RM : And more generally what is the specific situation in Russia.
How easy is the rebellious side of a metal band in Russia, are there any restrictions, or do you feel free as an artist? What are you most proud of professionally?
IB : In our work, we absolutely do not touch on political and religious issues, since I believe that metal music is something like a portal to other worlds and momentary things have no place in it. Accordingly, we have no problems with this.
Professionally? I am proud of the level that I managed to achieve on the new album.
RM : What are you most proud of personally?
IB : Personally? Do you mean my personal achievements? ...Well, well... I can't boast of a prosperous family, children, and so on... But I have a good library of fantastic literature, a good music library... well, and, perhaps - I have the best band line-up that I could only shake!)
RM : What is the most challenging to you in the future?
IB : The most difficult, but at the same time interesting task for me is to bring RUBICON to the level of a touring European band.
RM : Anything you would like to add to Rockmeeting readers and French fans?
