Dokken - In My Dreams (music video) HDTommy Shaw 'Ambition' CANDY195 / The name Tommy Shaw will always be synonymous with Styx, the hugely successful American pomp rock band that notched up a series of multiplatinum albums during the 70s and early 80s. After leaving Styx in 1983 he went on to carve out a solo career, resulting in a trio of well received albums before forming supergroup Damn Yankees alongside Ted Nugent and former Night Ranger songwriter Jack Blades. 'Ambition' was Tommy's third solo album and is generally regarded as the best of the batch. Teaming up with British producer Terry Thomas, the former leader and creative heart of cult AOR band Charlie, and recorded in London, musical assistance was provided by a number of top notch session players. Originally released in 1987, it received immediate and deserved acclaim as one of the most impressive sounding records of the time. Featuring some incredible vocal performances, recorded with pinpoint accuracy and loaded with ten truly great tracks (mostly co-written with Thomas), the record is a startling example of heavy but melodic rock with lashings of power and passion. Songs such as 'Dangerous Game', 'Are You Ready For Me' and 'The Outsider' say so much more about Shaw than we ever learnt when he was a member of Styx. Lead off track, 'No Such Thing' is one of the greatest, yet largely underexposed, tracks he's ever recorded. Look out too for a stunning version of Survivor's 'Ever Since The World Began', another feather in his cap.

Tommy Shaw - Somewhere In the NightKerry Livgren 'Seeds Of Change' CANDY226 / Of all the greats to emerge from the vibrant American scene in the 70's, few could match the grandiose vision of Kansas. Rising up from relatively inauspicious beginnings in Topeka, in less than a decade they were crafting multi-platinum albums and selling out arena tours right across the States. One of its founding members, and primary songwriter, guitarist Kerry Livgren was the chief architect behind that inexorable rise to success and songs such as 'Carry On Wayward Son' and 'Dust In The Wind' became indelibly etched on the musical psyche of a generation. As the decade drew to a close, however, inevitable changes were beginning to sweep through the Kansas camp. Pieced together during snatched moments of downtime away from the 'Audio Visions' recording sessions, Livgren's first solo album 'Seeds Of Change' is a long forgotten jewel. Featuring guest appearances from most of his Kansas colleagues, as well as cameo's from the likes of Ronnie James Dio, Jethro Tull drummer Barrie Barlow and Ambrosia frontman David Pack; it not only showcased the guitarist's versatility as a songwriter, but also allowed him to push the envelope like never before. Songs blessed with striking arrangements and a surfeit of stirring hooks, 'Mask Of The Great Deceiver', 'To Live For The King' and their ilk still rank amongst Livgren's greatest contributions to the pantheon of progressive rock music!

Speedway Boulevard 'S/T' CANDY206 / Whichever way you shake a stick at it, the lone album from studio creation Speedway Blvd is arguably one of the greatest hard rock albums that has ever been released. In a fair world this record would have gone on to sell several million copies propelling the band to international fame and fortune. As it happened, despite being signed to a major label, the record came and went in the blink of an eye with barely any acknowledgement of its existence. There's an interesting story here too. The project was initially envisioned as a studio creation by the legendary bubblegum production duo of Kasenetz and Katz. By the mid-seventies they had turned their attention to hard rock, creating in-house studio band Ram Jam and securing a massive international hit single with the track 'Black Betty'. With strong ties at Epic records the production duo gathered another cabal of New York musicians together to form Speedway Blvd. The focus was on lean and mean hard rock, with strong melodies and the killer voice of vocalist Roy Herring Jr. The unit also included future Balance bassist Dennis Feldman and Dream Theater keyboard player Jordan Rudess. Originally issued in 1980, because the album bombed it received little exposure and even less publicity. The band never played live and, in effect, never really consummated their studio gestation beyond these ten songs. Songs (all written by the band) which include the bombastic stadium rock of '(Call My Name) Rock Magic', 'Out Of The Fire' and the zeppelin influenced title track; all killer and no filler.
