RIP Storm Thorgerson - fondateur- Hipgnosis et ses pochettes d'albums mythiques

Storm Thorgerson est un photographe, réalisateur et graphiste anglais né en 1944 à Potters Bar (en) dans le Middlesex en Angleterre, et mort le 18 avril 20131. Il fait des études d’anglais et de philosophie à Leicester.

En 1968, il fonde, avec Aubrey Powell, un atelier graphique spécialisé dans la photographie créative, Hipgnosis. Il a créé les couvertures d'albums de très nombreux groupes et chanteurs, mais son travail réalisé pour le groupe de rock progressif Pink Floyd reste représentatif de son œuvre.

Thorgerson (par l’intermédiaire de Hipgnosis ou en son nom propre) a aussi travaillé pour Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin, Wishbone Ash, Genesis, 10cc, Muse, Robert Plant, Paul Young, etc.  Dans cet impressionnante liste (voir ci-dessous) je retiens plus particulièrement celles pour UFO dont la prestigieuse strangers In The Night :

Au tour des Scorpions à lui rendre hommage :

Thorgerson, qui a travaillé avec Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, DREAM THEATER et AUDIOSLAVE, parmi tant d'autres, est décédé le 17 Avril à l'âge de 69 ans. Sa famille a publié une déclaration disant qu'il est décédé paisiblement entouré de sa famille et ses amis. "Il était malade depuis un certain temps avec un cancer alors qu'il avait fait une reprise remarquable depuis son accident vasculaire cérébral en 2003," .

Les scorpions  :  "Nous sommes attristés par la nouvelle, notre Designer  graphique pour  Lovedrive  et animal  magnetism   Il était vraiment un artiste de génie et chaque fois qu'il est venu vers les studios Dierks à Cologne pour nous montrer une sélection de son travail c'était toujours beaucoup de plaisir;... nous avons aimé son humour britannique Il a tiré la pochette de «Lovedrive» dans  la Rolls Royce détenue par Elton John à l'époque. C'est devenu un classique et l'un des albums  favoris pour les scorpions à travers le monde.

Si je suis devenu un passionné et collectionneur de l'objet vinyl, on peut dire que c'est, en partie, grace à Storm Thogerson et sa firme Hipgnosis. Sa plus célèbre pochette réalisée restera le prisme pour Dark Side Of The Moon de Pink Floyd. Quel plaisir d'enlever un disque de sa pochette, de le poser sur la platine, y déposer délicatement le saphir, s'asseoir, écouter la musique en tenant une belle pochette dans ses mains, contempler l'artwork, et, y lire tous les détails. Voilà, plus de 40 ans que je pratique ces memes gestes et je ne m'en lasse pas. Quel plaisir d'avoir dans sa discothèque de tels objets vintage. Je pense à la pochette de Saucerfull Of Secret de Pink Floyd,   Argus de Wishbone Ash, Straight Shooter de Bad Company, Phénoménon, ou, encore Force It d'U.F.O. Il y avait aussi un autre désigner qui réalisait de très belles pochettes, notament pour Yes ou Uriah Heep, c'était Roger Dean. Désormais, j'aurais une pensée particulière pour Storm, lorsque je poserais sur ma platine, Houses Of The Holy de Led Zeppelin, ou, encore Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap d' AC/DC .
