Le gaucher Paul Raymond est le claviériste/guitariste rythmique de UFO depuis 1975.

Même s’il  a quitté le groupe à plusieurs reprises pour mener à bien d’autres projets (MSG, Waysted et son propre projet solo depuis 1989). Il faut dire que les humeurs et les allers retours de Michael Schenker dans UFO l’ont passablement agacé. Il est maintenant durablement dans le groupe depuis 2003. Selon moi Paul Raymond est le pilier de UFO et un excellent musicien et compositeur. Tapi dans l’ombre à la gauche de Phil Mogg et le brillantissime Vinnie Moore. Un sourire par-ci par-là mais diablement efficace.
Un peu après l’excellent album de UFO « Seven Deadly », il nous pond ici un album de son projet intitulé « Terms and Conditions Apply ». Il est entouré d’un groupe solide avec Andy Simmons aux guitares et claviers, Mark Coles à la basse, et Tony Steel à la batterie. On y retrouve deux special guests, le vocaliste de Stampede et monsieur Michael Schenker qui est, il faut le croire encore pote avec Paul. Mais venons-en à ce qui nous intéresse, le dernier album du Paul Raymond Project.
« Born and Raised on Rock’n’roll » fait office d’introduction à l’album. Paul est le lead singer du projet. Voix rauque et cassée. La chanson est un bon rock joyeux. Du déjà vu mais honnête et sympa. « End of Life as we Know it » est nettement plus intéressante. Refrain entrainant et choeurs accrocheurs. Manque de puissance dans la voix certes mais excellent morceau. « Deeper Shade of Blue » est moins intéressant, mais toutefois très UFOien. Rien de transcendant mais agréable. « C-List Celebrity » est beaucoup plus forte en sensations rock. Grosse guitare mise en avant. Entrée grand piano sur le superbe « We Will Be Strong » qui me fait penser à Queen, la voix en moins et c’est bien dommage. Toutefois une belle réussite. Le titre suivant « Terms and Conditions » est magnifique. Belles nappes de synthé, piano, rythme, intro très « Bonnie and Clyde » de Gainsbourg, grosse présence de la basse, guitare acoustique très énergique et grand solo de guitare. Superbe. On ne veut pas quitter le morceau mais voici qu’arrive l’instrumental de rigueur « Whiskey Mac » où tous s’en donnent à cœur joie. « Bright Lights » est moins réussi mais est jovial et on se prend à taper du pied et opiner de la tête. Assez irlandais dans l’esprit je trouve. La reprise des Four Tops « Reach Out (I’ll Be There) est très intéressante et audacieuse car il fallait trouver l’idée de la reprendre en mode rock. C’est sur ce titre que l’on y retrouve le sieur Schenker dont on reconnaît la patte dès les premières secondes. Une réussite encore. Dois-je vous dire comment est le solo de cette chanson ? « Love Is Blind » nous permet de retrouver le chanteur de Stampede, Reuben Archer dont la voix colle parfaitement à la chanson. Belles guitares et nappes de synthés pour un beau slow. « If You Gotta Make A Fool of Somebody » clos l’album avant les 3 bonus tracks. Ambiance blues. La voix de Raymond est mieux adaptée à ce type de musique. A noter un court mais très beau solo. Guitares agressives et batterie de plomb sur « Still the Same » le premier des trois titres bonus. Bon morceau rock. « Drifting Apart » est une ballade bien inventive et très agréable à écouter. Je vous vois en train de l’écouter en balade automobile en agréable compagnie. On clos l’album avec le rock « Partners in Crime ».


Au final 57 minutes d’un album qui se trouve assez diversifié et très plaisant à écouter. Rien de révolutionnaire mais Paul Raymond est un musicien honnête qui sait ce que rock’n’roll signifie.

The left-hander Paul Raymond is the keyboardist / rhythm guitarist for UFO since 1975. Even though he left the group on several occasions to carry out other projects (MSG Waysted and his own solo project since 1989). I must say that moods and back and forth of Michael Schenker in UFO have quite annoyed him. He is now permanently in the band since 2003. I believe Paul Raymond is the mainstay of UFO and an excellent musician and composer. Lurking in the shadows to the left of Phil Mogg and the brillant Vinnie Moore. With a smile here and there but devilishly effective.

Shortly after the UFO excellent album "Seven Deadly", Paul purposes to us an album project entitled "Terms and Conditions Apply." He is surrounded by a solid band with Andy Simmons on guitar and keyboards, Mark Coles on bass, and Tony Steel on drums. There are two special guests, vocalist of Stampede, Reuben Archer and Mr. Michael Schenker is, we must believe still friend with Paul. But let's get to what interests us, the last album of Paul Raymond Project.

"Born and Raised on Rock'n'roll" serves as an introduction to the album. Paul is the lead singer of the project. Hoarse and broken voice. The song is a good joyful rock'n'roll. Deja vu but honest and friendly. "End of Life as we Know it" is much more interesting. Catchy chorus. Lack of power in the voice but certainly excellent piece. "Deeper Shade of Blue" is less interesting, but still very UFO style. Nothing transcendent but pleasant. "C-List Celebrity" is much stronger rock sensations. Big guitar highlighted. Grand piano intro on "We Will Be Strong" which reminds me Queen, without the voice of Freddie Mercury. However, a great success. The next track "Terms and Conditions" is beautiful. Beautiful synth pads, piano,  intro very "Bonnie and Clyde" by Serge Gainsbourg, the presence of large bass, acoustic guitar very energetic and great guitar solo. Superb. We do not want to leave that song but here comes the instrumental  "Whiskey Mac" where everyone give talent and  heart. "Bright Lights" is less successful but jovial and we begin to tap our feet and nod our head. Enough Irish in mind I think. The resumption of Four Tops "Reach Out (I'll Be There) is very interesting and bold as it was necessary to find the idea of rock resume mode. It is on this song that we find Mr. Schenker which recognizes the style from the first seconds. Success yet. Do I tell you how is the solo of this song? "Love Is Blind" allows us to find the Stampede vocalist, Reuben Archer whose voice fits perfectly with the song. Beautiful guitars and synth for a nice slowsong. "If You Gotta Make A Fool of Somebody" closed the album before the 3 bonus tracks. Bluesy atmosphere. Raymond's voice is better suited to this type of music. Note a short but beautiful solo. Aggressive guitars and drums on "Still the Same" the first of three bonus tracks. Good rock song. "Drifting Apart" is a ballad very inventive and very pleasant to listen to. I see you to listen to it in a car ride with good company. We ended the album with the rock "Partners in Crime".

57 minutes of an album that is quite diverse and very pleasant to listen to. Nothing revolutionary but Paul Raymond is an honest musician who knows what rock'n'roll means.
